'The Batman' (2022) Movie Review
If Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight movies were a tad too upbeat, festive, short, and well-lit for you, don’t worry The Batman is here to rectify all that. Directed by Matt Reeves (Dawn and War for the Planet of the Apes), the latest tale of Gotham’s Caped Crusader is a lot of movie—in terms of runtime, in terms of storylines, in terms of plot, and brooding, and fistfights, and set pieces, and… Some of which works well, some of which never comes together in a satisfying way.

'The Lighthouse' (2019) Movie Review
Where to begin with The Lighthouse? If you go in expecting the creeping Satanic dread of writer/director Robert Eggers last film, The Witch, you’ll be let down. That’s not to say there’s no creeping dread, because there’s plenty, it’s simply of a different sort. The film edges up to the supernatural, but is more concerned with what lurks inside, deep down, waiting to emerge. It’s also, as my notes taken during the screening attest, “weird as balls.” Somehow it works. I’m not always entirely certain how, but it does.

'The Lighthouse' Trailer: It's Robert Pattinson Vs. Willem Dafoe
Over the weekend, The Lighthouse, the latest from The Witch director Robert Eggers, played at the Toronto International Film Festival. I try to avoid early reactions for movies I’m excited about, like this one, and I don’t put much stock in the reactions I do see come out of film festivals. But this one appears to have broken some brains, and I count that as a win. To mark the occasion, A24 released a new trailer, and I’m still not sure what we’re about to witness.

'The Lighthouse' Trailer: Robert Pattinson And Willem Dafoe Get Creepy In Robert Eggers' Latest Horror
Robert Eggers’ The Witch (or The VVitch if you’re one of those) is one of the best horror movies, and best movies, of the decade. That was his first feature, so what do you do for a follow up when your debut was one of the most acclaimed films in recent memory? You apparently make a black and white, Lovecraftian tale about two olde timey lighthouse keepers. One of my most-anticipated movies of the year, The Lighthouse now has a trailer.

Robert Pattinson And Claire Denis Explore The Depths Of Space, And Humanity, In This 'High Life' Trailer
Claire Denis directing a stellar (sorry) cast in an esoteric, deep-space hybrid of sci-fi, drama, and horror. You better believe I’m psyched beyond belief for High Life. Some folks saw it on the fall film festival circuit last year, but the rest of us have to wait until April—at least it has a release date now. But everything we’ve seen, including this new trailer, makes it look worth having patience.

Robert Pattinson Almost Punched 'The Witch' Director On The Set Of Their Rad-Sounding New Movie
Yes, this story about Robert Pattinson almost punching The Witch director Robert Eggers on the set of their new movie, The Lighthouse, is the best thing I’ve read all day. And as the world descends into chaos around us (hopefully less so after the polls close), can’t we all use a good pick-me-up? And there are also details about The Lighthouse, which sounds rad.

Claire Denis' 'High Life' Trailer Has Robert Pattinson, Deep Space, Babies, And Black Holes
Even if I didn’t particularly care for her last film, Let the Sunshine In (though Juliette Binoche is incredible in it), a new Claire Denis movie will always be a cause for celebration. And the Trouble Every Day and Beau Travail director helming an esoteric, erotic, deep space sci-fi thriller with an incredible cast? Well, that’s reason enough to throw a damn party. Her latest, High Life, has been on my must-watch radar since I first heard about it, and this new French trailer only cranks up my anticipation.

New 'High Life' Photos: Claire Denis, Robert Pattinson, And Sci-Fi
Not to be confused with the “Champagne of Beers,” Claire
Denis’ Robert Pattinson-starring sci-fi drama High Life is a
movie we’re rather excited about around these parts. It’s been in the works
since 2015, and though we haven’t seen a ton from film, it has our full
attention. And a handful of lovely new stills arrived on the scene today.

'Good Time' (2017) Movie Review
Coming from a studio these days, a film like the Safdie
Brothers’ Good Time would likely turn into an action-packed
caper. But in the Safdie’s hands—and fronted by a performance from Robert Pattinson that should be in the awards conversation come the end of the year, but
probably won’t—it’s a gritty, off-kilter, singularly propulsive crime drama
that synthesizes John Carpenter and the French New Wave and showcases New York
as a dingy, grimy, overall fucked up and nasty place.

'The Lost City Of Z' (2017) Movie Review
To get this out of the way up front, I hated every second of
James Gray’s The Lost City of Z. In reality, that’s probably
all you need to know. Everything that comes after this is simply a more
specific reiteration of that larger point. I dislike this in a raw, visceral
way that I don’t hate many movies.

'The Rover' Movie Review
Robert Pattinson desperately wants to distance himself from
his Twilight teen-heartthrob image, something I’ve never
understood in the first place, because he is a strange looking individual. And
what better way to shake off the persona of a sparkly vampire than by letting
the rough, windblown post-apocalyptic Australian frontier sandblast it off? There
is not much glitter in The Rover, the latest film from
director David Michod (Animal Kingdom), a grim, gritty
addition to the genre that makes the world of Mad Max look
downright cheery in comparison.

'Cosmopolis' Movie Review
“Cosmopolis” is an interesting movie for a number of
reasons. First and foremost is director David Cronenberg. That will always be a
selling point. Second, it’s based on a Don Delillo novel, and while I have a
hot and cold reaction the man’s work (loved “White Noise”, hated “Underworld”),
his books are usually thought provoking at the very least. Finally, the film
takes on a topic very much in the public eye, the current financial crisis, and
with a strong anti-capitalist stance, it presets a viewpoint that you don’t
often find in mainstream cinematic culture. While all of this is nice—that they’re
trying to make a film that’s unique, that has a message—“Cosmopolis” isn’t a
very good movie, and fails on a narrative level.
