Bear Witness To A24's Mystery Sci-Fi Film Trailer

A24 has been on a tear. Just last year the indie factory farm released The Witch, Green Room, The Lobster, Moonlight, and a ton of other fantastic movies. Basically, they can do whatever the hell they want and I’ll at least give it a shot. If nothing else, it’ll be interesting. Such is the case with their new mystery science fiction project. There’s not much to go on from this trailer, which looks a little like Word Association: The Movie. Take a look.

It seems like A24 borrowed a page from Bad Robot’s “Mystery Box” playbook. From the little bit we see, whatever the hell this is looks intriguing, full of esoteric themes of identity, life, and death. Watching this trailer, the immediate comparison is Shane Carruth (Primer, Upstream Color), though there’s still a distinct vibe that sets it apart from his work.

According to The Playlist (who also not the similarities to Carruth), when the trailer was originally uploaded to YouTube, it bore the title TOR TSR WITNESS. Again, I have no clue what that means. If you do, holler.

The only other clue is the tagline: “In our near future.” That’s vague and doesn’t reveal much. It’s also a fact easily gleaned from the footage in the trailer, which is full of images and technology that are simultaneously familiar, yet obviously somewhat more advanced than what we have available in the present moment. Of course, this may also mean this project will appear in the near future. Oh, those wily A24 folks.

I suspect if you read Japanese, which I do not, this shot may offer some kind of insight, but I could be wrong.

Who the hell knows what this is all about, but like I said, at this stage A24 has earned my trust and I’m a sucker for brainy, dreamy, obtuse sci-fi. So, I’m totally game. Who made it? Don’t know. What’s it about? No clue. When will we see it? No idea. But I will most definitely be waiting for more. How about you, are you in?
