Sam Whitner (You’re the Worst’s Chris Geere) leads a TV team of faux-paranormal investigators, staging hauntings to please fans and sponsors. As their show teeters on cancellation, in a last-ditch effort, the gang heads to the “most haunted casa in all of Mexico.” Turns out it’s actually haunted, ghosts are real, and they’re in way over their heads.
Tony West’s Deadtectives mixes horror and comedy, sometimes well, sometimes not. The beginning is rough; the comedy sitcom-y, the horror forced and toothless, but near the halfway mark, the film strikes a balance between jokes and scares—and leans into the spooky. It compares well to Peter Jackson’s The Frighteners, and the strong back half makes up for a rocky start.
