'Striking Rescue' (2024) Movie Review

Tony Jaa. Muay Thai. Revenge. Bone-breaking action. Any one of those terms is likely enough to entice most of us to watch a movie. If we’re being honest, we’ve all watched movies for less. Combine all those elements, however, and you’re onto something. Which is exactly what Striking Rescue does. The latest from director Cheng Si-Yu (the woefully underseen Tai Chi Master, which you should also seek out if you haven’t), is 100% the movie it looks like, and though you’ve seen this many times before and won’t find any surprises lurking around the corner, it’s 100% the movie it looks like in the best possible way. 

'Jiu Jitsu' (2020) Movie Review

A movie starring Nicolas Cage, Alain Moussi, Tony Jaa, Frank Grillo, JuJu Chan, Marie Avgeropoulos, and Rick Yune, about a group of elite fighters who must use martial arts to defeat an alien invader, directed by one of the masterminds behind the recent Kickboxer films. That’s probably enough information for viewers to decide whether or not to see Jiu Jitsu, a film that delivers precisely what one might expect, waffling between awful and awesome.

The Cage-fronted Jiu Jitsu is one of our most-anticipated movies of 2020 (and any year to be honest), and now we know when we can see it because it has a release date.

This will surprise absolutely no one, but Yuen Woo-ping can stage the hell out of a fight. The guy is a legend for good reason. And he displays this particular skill front and center in his latest directorial effort, Master Z: Ip Man Legacy, which features choreography on par with some of his best. Inventive and thrilling, it runs the gamut from incredibly technical martial arts acumen to high-flying wire artistry that calls to mind his work on Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

Happy Valentine’s Day! While some choose to celebrate this holiday with candy, candlelight, and other romantic markers, I prefer the way the good folks behind Triple Threat like to party, with face kicking, spinning elbows, flying knees, and general badass action mayhem. Yes, the full Triple Threat trailer promised a few days ago has arrived, and all I can say is, “Hell Yes!” to what is apparently “the killingest action event of the year.”

Under normal circumstances, I’m not inclined to share trailers for trailers That’s generally a ridiculous practice and sharing actual trailers is problematic enough. (I’m a fan, they get me hyped, but I now many folks who avoid them like the plague—to each his own.) 'Paradox' Trailer: Wilson Yip Teams With Tony Jaa And Sammo Hung For Face Punching Galore

Fans of modern international action cinema are, or sure as hell should be, fans of Hong Kong director Wilson Yip. He helmed the first three Ip Man movies, with another on the way, SPL: Kill Zone, Flash Point, and tons more. (Also Bio-Zombie. I’ll take any chance to mention Bio-Zombie, because no one talks about it enough.) Now he’s returning to the SPL (Sha Po Lang) franchise with the third chapter, Paradox, which just dropped a badass new trailer.

Triple Threat is all of my favorite things wrapped up in one convenient package. Action, martial arts, gunplay. Oh, and it stars every cinematic badass currently working. The credits include Tony Jaa, Iko Uwais, Tiger Chen, Scott Adkins, Michael Jai White, JeeJa Yanin, Michael Wong, Michael Bisping, and Celina Jade. I hope I didn’t forget anyone, but I may have, the list is long and distinguished. As you may imagine, I’m beyond excited for Triple Threat, and that anticipation just took another huge leap forward with the first trailer. Check it out after the jump.

When you conjure up an image of Tony Jaa, odds are you think of the Thai action superstar, the star of the likes of Ong-Bak, Tom Yum Goong, and Kill Zone 2, deftly pummeling cinematic villains, and, of late, Vin Diesel and his cronies. But deep down, every musician wants to be a movie star, and every actor wants to be a musician, so Tony Jaa released his first pop single. Cinematic face-breakers Tony Jaa, Iko Uwais, and Tiger Chen have been trying to work on a film together for a while now. They had Makeshift Squad, billed as an “Asian Expendables,” lined up, but that has yet to materialize. After that, we heard reports of Triple Threat, to be directed by John Wick: Chapter 2 helmer Chad Stahelski. That also failed to get off the starting blocks. But the trio of preeminent movie martial artists are back at it again, reportedly attached to a new project, also titled Triple Threat, and they’re bringing reinforcements in the form of Scott Adkins, Michael Jai White, and UFC Middleweight champion Michael Bisping. Yeah, It’s like they asked me what I want in a movie and did exactly what I said. It almost brings a tear to my eye it’s so beautiful.

'xXx: Return Of Xander Cage' (2017) Movie Review

xXx: Return of Xander Cage is nonsense garbage. But holy shit if it isn’t the most entertaining nonsense garbage I’ve seen in some time. Sit down, strap in, and prepare turn the person in the next seat and ask, “what?” repeatedly. All while wearing an irrepressible idiot grin from ear to ear.

'John Wick' Director Teams Up With Iko Uwais, Tony Jaa, And Tiger Chen

Stunt-performer-turned-director Chad Stahelski (with partner in crime David Leitch) turned in one of the best modern action movies with John Wick, and I’m understandably pretty jazzed about John Wick: Chapter 2. Stahelski tackled the sequel solo (while Leitch helms the upcoming spy thriller The Coldest City), but that’s not all he has on his plate. He’ll direct a movie called Triple Threat, which just so happens to star three of the preeminent movie badasses of the moment: Tony Jaa, Iko Uwais, and Tiger Chen.

The Expendables movies are great in theory, but the execution leaves much to be desired. But that’s not going to stop action movies from getting as many badasses in a room at the same time as possible. And a new film called Makeshift Squad just collected a number of the world’s preeminent movie martial artists: Tony Jaa, Iko Uwais, Tiger Chen, and Angelababy. So, yeah, this is the movie constantly playing in my mind.

'xXx: The Return Of Xander Cage' Trailer Skis In The Jungle And Rides A Motorcycle On Water

Considering how much I have come to adore Vin Diesel for his over-the-top action spectacles, the fact that seems like a genuine, earnest dude, and his deep commitment to being a complete and utter nerd, his 2002 actioner xXx is not one I’ve ever been able to get behind. It’s not one of his finest moments. But apparently there was enough interest to make xXx: The Return of Xander Cage happen. (More accurately, Diesel had enough interest—the man has an endearing force of will to make whatever the hell he wants happen.) The unnecessary film just dropped its first trailer. The result is bugnuts fucking crazy and I’m now 100% enamored.
