'Long Gone Heroes' (2024) Movie Review

We’ve all been there. We’re in the middle of extra-legal incursion into a foreign country, we’ve been shot, we’re bleeding out, not long for this world. Our old friend cradles our head as we take our last breath, and we use these last moments on this mortal coil to utter our final words…and we make a joke about our dick size. This has happened to all of us, right? No? Hmm. Well, this happens in Long Gone Heroes, to a significant character, late in the game when this should carry substantial weight, and it really nails the mentality of this movie.

'Lights Out' (2024) Movie Review

Lights Out knows what you came to see. (And it's not the horror Lights Out.)You came to see Frank Grillo throw down. And throw down he does. Constantly. It’s also precisely the movie it advertises itself as, and while your mileage may vary, if this is your thing, this is very much your thing. It begins with a tactical running battle and moments later there’s a bar brawl. If that sounds like a good time, you’re in luck.

'Little Dixie' (2023) Movie Review

There are two kinds of Frank Grillo movies, Frank-Grillo-gives-a-shit and Frank-Grillo-doesn’t-give-a-shit. Essentially projects he cares about and jobs he takes for a paycheck, and it’s obvious which is which—in one he’s clearly engaged and the other, well, you can guess. Little Dixie, the latest from writer/director John Swab (Ida Red), with whom Grillo has worked several times now, fortunately falls into the latter category. Also, Frank Grillo with a chainsaw. (Which, unfortunately, is not as cool as it sounds.)

'Shattered' (2022) Movie Review

When reclusive tech millionaire Chris Decker (Cameron Monaghan, Gotham) goes shopping late one night he has a chance encounter with former model Sky (Lilly Krug) at the supermarket. At least he thinks it’s chance encounter. Chris and Sky fall into a hot, passionate love affair, and you know what they say about things that look too good to be true. So begins Shattered, the latest film from director Luis Prieto (Kidnap) and writer David Loughery (Lakeview Terrace, Passenger 57).

'Copshop' (2021) Movie Review

Directed by Joe Carnahan (The Grey) and fronted by Gerard Butler (Den of Thieves) and Frank Grillo (The Purge: Anarchy), it’s easy to envision what a movie titled Copshop is likely to deliver. If you expect and hope for a violent, irreverent slice of tough-guy action thriller, you will not be disappointed. 

'Jiu Jitsu' (2020) Movie Review

A movie starring Nicolas Cage, Alain Moussi, Tony Jaa, Frank Grillo, JuJu Chan, Marie Avgeropoulos, and Rick Yune, about a group of elite fighters who must use martial arts to defeat an alien invader, directed by one of the masterminds behind the recent Kickboxer films. That’s probably enough information for viewers to decide whether or not to see Jiu Jitsu, a film that delivers precisely what one might expect, waffling between awful and awesome.

Dreams really do come true. COVID-19 has wreaked havoc on movies an movie releases, especially big blockbusters. But there’s still plenty of room for oddball films to slip through and get a release. And what’s more oddball than a Nicolas Cage-starring sci-fi saga where humanity has to use martial arts to defeat alien invaders? The Cage-fronted Jiu Jitsu is one of our most-anticipated movies of 2020 (and any year to be honest), and now we know when we can see it because it has a release date.

'Into The Ashes' (2019) Movie Review

Sometimes, on paper, a movie has all the ingredients necessary for success, but for one reason or another—or many—just doesn’t work. Such is the case with writer/director Aaron Harvey’s Into the Ashes. It contains most of my favorite cinematic things—Frank Grillo, violence, a grim revenge tale—but other issues bog down the film and, it brings me no pleasure to report, it simply isn’t very good.

So far, December 15 is shaping up to be the best day of my calendar year. Not only does Star Wars: The Last Jedi open, but Amazon drops the first season of Jean-Claude Van Johnson, and the after-the-fact sci-fi sequel Beyond Skyline also hits. You may or may not know this, but at this point, I’ll watch anything with Frank Grillo. And that goes double for any movie about backwoods bareknuckle fighting where he plays someone named Chainsaw Angus. Which is the name of his character in the upcoming Donnybrook.

'Beyond Skyline' Has A New Trailer And Release Date

It feels like 75% of what I’ve written about recently involves Beyond Skyline, and that’s fine with me. Not a fan of the 2010 alien invasion yarn, Skyline, the after-the-fact sequel looks completely badass. And that includes this new U.S. trailer. Perhaps even more exciting than that, is there’s now a confirmed release date on American soil, which is a pretty sweet indeed.

Okay, okay, 2010’s alien invasion movie Skyline wasn’t great. And sure, it’s been seven years, but what the hell, why not knock out a sequel? The 2010 alien invasion film Skyline is not, how to put this delicately, good. In fact, it’s bad. Which is a shame. It had potential, but instead it’s just shitty. It was, however, cheap ($10 million). And it did make some money ($66 million worldwide), but not the kind of scratch that automatically makes one think of sequels. But against all odds, a sequel has been in the works for a while and this trailer for Beyond Skyline has everything I like: sci-fi, Frank Grillo, Iko Uwais, and Yayan Ruhian fighting aliens. Go figure.

'Wolf Warrior 2' Trailer: Try To Fit More Action Into Two Minutes, I Dare You

Thanks, Well Go USA, you know me so well. You know how much I love guns, explosions, tank battles, hulking dudes with heavy weapons, and Frank Grillo. And you managed to find Wu Jing’s Wolf Warrior 2, which combines all of those elements and more. I feel like this trailer is just for me, but I feel bad because I didn’t get you anything.
